Inforce is a very well known American Company, especially for its pistol lights these days, which are highly popular on the civilian market. Their rifle lights on the other hand are well known on the Military/LEO spectrum where they are considered tough, reliable and affordable. The WMLx (weapon mounted light) is a prime example of that. Read on for the full review.
Design:
The first thing you’ll notice when picking up the Inforce WMLx is that while it is built out of polymer, it feel sleek, sturdy and seamless. It has a well rounded design, that avoids any edges or corners that could latch on to other objects. The Inforce comes built in with an adapter for either a picatinny or weaver rail with no external pieces needed for attachment which means you put it on or take it off the rifle in a matter of seconds. The overall design is very sleek and smooth, and that really makes it feel like it is an inherent part of the gun which is a really great feel. The button in the back is curved and ribbed (yes, for your pleasure), won’t let your finger slip and has a really tactile feel to it when pressing it down. The Inforce WMLx has two light activation modes, either continuous or momentary and switching between them is done by simply flipping the switch on the side 180 degrees to either the back or front. Continuous means that when holding the light down for more than half a second, it’ll be momentary when you release. Quickly pushing and releasing leaves continuous light on, and a double tap will strobe. The momentary mode will only allow for the light to be on while you’re pressing down. There is a nice indicator strip for constant and momentary functions. In the back there is a nice security feature, which is a latch you can raise to cover the button and it’ll make it quite hard to accidentally push the button when you don’t want it on. By its very design, this light will work most effectively for people either using the C-Clamp shooting technique or using a forward handle as pictured. In both these cases, all that has to be moved is the thumb, in order to manipulate the light. On to the lighting itself. The light uses 2 CR123 Batteries to function. These have about 1-2 hours of runtime, yet in a month of being used in active duty, we never had to switch batteries. The WMLx has a penetrating 500 Lumens beam, which is warm and has a good throw and a nice tight beam with sufficient peripheral light. 500 Lumens is very effective, both in search ops or when blinding enemies. While some people mention that the light gets quite hot after use, we experienced quite the opposite, it never got too warm.
Material:
The WMLx is made out of very tough polymer and that shows because we trashed it around quite a lot and it still looks like new. It is very shock resistant and sealed to the elements. It will work wherever you need it to whether it be rain, mud or snow. The WMLx is Waterproof up to 66 feet! The front portion is replaceable just in case. The one downside we saw is that the safety guard in the back is too loose and tends to jiggle, which it shouldn’t. The WMLx is available in Tan and Black.
Comfort:
The Inforce WMLx is supremely comfortable to carry and manipulate. It is angled to avoid entanglement with wires while pressing down and its sleek design contributes to the light feeling more like a part of the gun as opposed to an external accessory. It weighs around 125 grams with batteries which is enough to make it feel substantial yet leave it light enough for comfortable carry. Yes, it is slightly large for 500 lumens, but do keep in mind that this is the Gen.1. Gen.2 includes many improvements.
Storage:
As we mentioned before, the WMLx will attach to any picattiny or weaver rail easily and quickly. When you loosen the screw knob, it will function like a clamp button that you can open and insert or remove from the rail, after which you can tighten it again. If not tightened properly, it cas easily tear off the gun railing by accident. In addition, we found ourselves checking the screw knob very often for fear of it falling off, as it would loosen up by itself. In addition, to make a tiedown for the light, you really have to mod a string around it since there is a lack of opening or slot to attach any string to. The safety latch is an option, but then it wouldn’t be seated properly. Based on your preference, you may want to go for the smaller version with some weapons. We tried using the light on the IWI X95 TAR and it doesn’t quite fit because of the size. There’s not enough picatinny on the side, unless you’re willing to impede access to the charging handle. This means that you have to bring the light all the way forward. Yes, this means less shadow from the barrel but much more carbon build up. You win some, you lose some. Putting it on the other side of the rifle is not an option if you need active manipulation. For actual storage, you can use both the latch in the back that covers the button, or you can half unscrew the cap in the front to disable the light, which are two neat features to avoid draining the battery during storage.
“If your enemy is seeing your barrel shadow, you’re too slow” -Master Sergeant G.”
Versatility:
While these can definitely be used by anyone. this model was definitely designed with Military and LEO in mind and it shows in the robustness, It can be mounted literally everywhere you have a rail and it will function beautifully. Anyone who uses a rifle would find a great use for this rifle light. There’s really no excuse to not use a rifle light these days anymore.
“I used the Inforce WMLx a lot while making arrests, vehicle and house searches in pitch-black darkness to great effectiveness. In addition, I even used it at some point to blind two terrorists while we took them down. Great little thing. – Master Sergeant G.”
Price:
The Gen.1 isn’t for sale anymore, at least not officially. However, the improved Gen.2 can be purchased for around $170 which isn’t cheap but definitely a worthy price for an item of this quality. Serious shooters will definitely want to get this.
In conclusion, the Inforce WMLx is a fantastic tactical rifle light which will really improve your rifle shooting experience and make you a smoother and more professional operator. Its sleek and well designed shape fits right in with nearly any rifle and with the reliability and the effectiveness it offers it is a fantastic piece that will last you a long while.
